The Information & Broadcasting Ministry has banned the television channel Free X-TV for telecasting obscene programmes. An order prohibiting transmission and retransmission of the channel has been issued and has been forwarded to India broadcasting foundation (IBF) and all cable operators and MSOs, the Ministry said.

It had come to the notice of the government that some cable operators in the country through their cable transmission networks were transmitting and re-transmitting this channel, the ministry added. The order has also been sent to all the chief secretaries, director general of police of all states and union territories. The decision has also been communicated to district magistrates who are authorised to implement the decision as per the Cable Television Networks (regulation) Act 1995.

Recently, it has also banned channels such as Ren TV for airing objectionable content and thereby prohibiting its transmission. The ministry has evidence that some cable networks have been beaming the pornographic channel to their subscribers.
