The Board of Control for Cricket in India, BCCI has awarded the telecast rights for upcoming one-day series against Sri Lanka and South Africa to Prasar Bharati. Prasar Bharati won the the deal offering RS 7.5 crore per match, while production rights for the two series went to TWI. India will play seven one-dayers against Sri Lanka, followed by five against South Africa.

The series against Sri Lanka starts at Nagpur on October 25. Note that the marketing committee of the BCCI, formed recently has looked into the bids received by the Board for television rights for the next four years. The subcommittee consists of BCCI President Ranbir Singh Mahendra, predecessor Jagmohan Dalmiya and Punjab Cricket Association President IS Bindra.

Bindra had said on Wednesday, that the tender for TV rights was restrictive and if all demands were met only two channels would qualify for two-year rights. The day's decision, however, gives board some breathing space to finalise 2005-2009 TV rights an issue that has forced into courts frequently since last year.

Even on the day legal issues writ large as the board's senior legal counsel, U.N. Banerjee, present as a special invitee apprised the members that the matter pertaining to TV rights of the board for next four years that was listed before Justice M.P. Katju and Justice Madan Lokur was transferred to another bench presided over by DR Justice M.K. Sharma.

It may be also recalled that a division bench, comprising acting Chief Justice B A Khan and Justice M B Lokur, which allowed BCCI to open the technical bids to decide the eligibility of the bidders including Zee Telefilms, asked the cricket body not to disclose the outcome on October 4. The BCCI was told to inform the outcome to the court on October 19, the matter which came up for further hearing.

As senior counsel Harish Salve, who appeared for Zee Telefilms, submitted that the interim arrangement was contrary to an assurance given by BCCI to the court that it would not grant any TV rights to any particular party pending the petition filed by Zee, the court asked BCCI to file an affidavit giving details of the decision taken by it by Saturday and posted the matter for further hearing on Monday.
