Pawan Bhargav, a 35-year-old journalist working for Sahara Samay news channel, who is believed to have initiated the sting operation against Nerul police constable Hameed Nazir Qazi, attempted suicide on Wednesday by consuming pesticide. The suicide attempt follows the interrogation of several journalists who were involved in the sting operation undertaken to catch Qazi red-handed, reports say.

Sultan Khan, Pawan's associate has said that, "Pawan was very tense on Tuesday night as he feared that he would be arrested and falsely implicated in the case. Senior Inspector Ashok Pawar told me that Pawan consumed pesticide at a lodge in Thane. He has been admitted to Thane Civil hospital. He is out of danger, but he is not talking."

In a suicide note addressed to Home Minister R.R. Patil, Pawan held the Navi Mumbai police commissioner and an assistant commissioner of police, and two other reporters involved in the sting operation responsible for his 'death'.
