Amrita TV to telecast Nehru Trophy Boat Race

Televisionpoint.com Correspondent Amrita TV has been assigned the satellite telecast rights for the 55th Nehru Trophy Boat Race on August 11, 2007 at Alappuzha which will be inaugurated by the Chief Justice of India. Amrita TV will be beaming the race across the 1400 metre track length comprising over 50 boats of various sizes manned by over 3000 oarsmen, which includes men and women. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is held on the second Saturday of August every year, is the most competitive and popular of the boat races. On the day of this fiercely fought boat race, the tranquil lake front is transformed into a sea of humanity with an estimated two lakh people, including tourists from abroad, coming to watch the event. For the people of each village in Kuttanad, Alappuzha, a victory at this race for their village boat is something to be celebrated for months to come. The Race is the greatest team sport on water, often termed as Kuttanad's Olympics on Water. The major attraction of the boat race is the competition of 16 chundanvallams or snake boats, an impressive sight, measuring over 100 feet in length, with nearly 90 oarsmen in one snake boat. |
