Televisionpoint.com Correspondent | Mumbai Media Research User's Council (MRUC) has released the findings of the Indian Readership Survey (IRS) 2007 Round 2.
Most dailies in the top 10 list have shown a decline in readership, except for 'Danik Bhaskar', 'Rajasthan Patrika', 'The Times of India' and 'Ananda Bazar Patrika'. 'Mathrubhumi' and 'Lokmat', have lost the ground as they could not make in the top 10 dailies, they held the eighth and 10th positions respectively, in the last round of IRS.
According to the IRS 2007 Round 2, 'Dainik Jagran' continues to lead the lists of top 10 publications and of the top 10 dailies, with an average issue readership (AIR) of 1.65 crore, though its AIR has decreased by 3.5 per cent since the previous round.
'Dainik Bhaskar', on the other hand has registered a growth in AIR of 2.4 per cent, the Hindi daily has grown its readership by 3 lakh as compared to the previous round, with an readership base of 1.28 crore.
'Malayala Manorama' has moved up one rank, its AIR has declined from 88.37 lakh in Round 1, 2007 to 86.62 lakh in Round 2, IRS 2007.
'Hindustan' has seen the maximum decline of whooping 5.5 per cent in readership among the top dailies. It has slipped one rank with a readership of 85.51 lakh, down from 90.52 lakh in Round 1, IRS 2007, when it was at number three.
The fifth and sixth position have been interchanged between 'Amar Ujala' and 'Daily Thanthi'. 'Amar Ujala' is number five, its readership has declined by 2.1 per cent to an AIR of 80.75 lakh, while 'Daily Thanthi's readership has declined by 5.2 per cent to 79.1 lakh.
'Rajasthan Patrika' comes at the seventh position, showing an increase in readership by 6.5 per cent, which is highest among the top 10 dailies. It readership has increased from 69.46 lakh in the previous round to 74.02 lakh in the present round.
'Eenadu' at the eighth rank, has registered a decline in readership by 4.34 per cent, with its readership currently standing at 69.19 lakh.
At number nine is 'ABP', which has moved up from number 12 position and has increased its readership by 4.84 per cent, taking its average issue readership to 68.55 lakh.
At number ten is 'TOI', which has increased its readership by 0.69 per cent to 68.28 lakh readers in the current round of IRS. The interesting trend is for 'TOI', whereby the readership of Lokmat has dropped out of the top 10 list and its loss is gain for the 'The Times of India'. Nonetheless, with a readership, the Times continues to be the largest read English newspaper in the World.
Moving ahead to the English language, in the top 10 publication list, five dailies and five magazines make a cloud-nine scene.
'TOI' continues to lead the top 10 English list, with an total readership of 135 lakh, while 'India Today' claims the second position with a total figure of 71 lakh. 'Hindustan Times' and 'The Hindu' are at 61 lakh and 53 lakh, respectively. Both 'The Telegraph' and 'Deccan Chronicle' are at 30 lakh each.
Given their total readership figures of 49 lakh, 44 lakh, 37 lakh and 33 lakh, Readers Digest, GK Today, Filmfare and Competition Success Review, respectively, have shown an impressive numbers. Three magazines feature among the top 10 Hindi publications are Saras Salil with a readership of 106 lakh, Griha Shobha with 79 lakh and India Today with 70 lakh.
'ABP' leads the Bengali publications with a readership of 158 lakh, 'Bartaman' is at second spot with 88 lakh, 'Sangbad Pratidin' at third with 46 lakh, 'Ganashakti' is at No. 4 with 40 lakh, followed by 'Aajkaal' with 36 lakh.
'Vijay Karnataka' leads Kannada publications with a readership figure of 99 lakh. 'Prajavani' with 66 lakh is second, followed by 'Samyukta Karnataka' with 30 lakh, 'Udayavani' with 29 lakh, and 'Kannada Prabha' with 26 lakh readership figures.
'Lokmat' is the largest read Marathi daily with a total readership of 207 lakh. 'Daily Sakal', 'Punya Nagri', 'Pudhari' and 'Loksatta' follow with readerships of 126 lakh, 99 lakh, 63 lakh and 46 lakh, respectively.
Among the Tamil Publications, 'Daily Thanthi' with a total readership of 209 lakh is the highest read. 'Dinakaran' and 'Dinamalar' follow with readership figures of 161 lakh and 113 lakh, respectively. 'Kungumam' and 'Kumudam' are on the fourth and the fifth spots with 84 lakh and 82 lakh readerships, respectively.
Among Telugu publications, 'Eenadu' tops the chart with a total readership of 142 lakh. 'Daily Vartha' and 'Andhra Jyothi' follow with total readership of 71 lakh and 57 lakh, respectively. 'Swati Sapari Vara Patrika' is at the fourth spot with 28 lakh, while 'Andhra Bhoomi' is at the fifth spot with a readership of 16 lakh. |
