Durgesh Gupta - Televisionpoint.com | Mumbai Guruji.com, a local search engine is planning to foray into search engine marketing (SEM) segment in the first quarter of 2008. The company expects to generate substantial revenues from this area, where search engines offer advertisements on search results pages.
"We are in the process of starting an advertising platform on our search engine. We think that there is a great opportunity in India for this service," Anurag Dod, CEO, Guruji.com said.
According to Dod, "The advantage that his company can bring to the table for advertisers is the 'local' aspect as also the cost advantage. We can open up the SME segment who have not used this method of advertising before."

The local SEM segment is worth about $40-50 million in India. Experts believe that the Indian market should touch between $100-120 million in the next 3 years. The largest SEM vendors globally are Google AdWords, Yahoo Search Marketing and Microsoft adCenter. But other local players like China's Baidu, south Korea's Naver and Russia's Yandex are strong in their geographies.
Apart from this, Guruji.com plans to expand to about 50 cities in India by 2008-end. Currently, the search engine is present in 34 cities. Other than English, it has regional language versions in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi.
