The 55th Filmfare South Awards in Chennai on July 12

    Tuesday - Jul 08, 2008

A tussle for the 55th Filmfare South Awards is in the offing as some of the best entries are in the fray. The event will be held in Chennai on July 12, with Sun TV as official television partner, Radio Mirchi Chennai as official radio partner. Tiger Balm is the title partner for this event.

In the best film category there are top entertainers like - Sivaji, Pokkiri and Billa pitted against off-beat movies that were critically acclaimed as well as hits at the box-office like - Mozhi and Paruthiveeran. The cream of Kollywood film makers who have directed meaningful films and those appreciated by the masses like Ameer, Radha Mohan, Shankar, Vetrimaran and Prabhu Deva are slugging it out in the best director category.

Those nominated in the 'best actor' category (male) are superstars in the industry - Rajinikanth (Sivaji), Vijay (Pokkiri), Ajit (Billa), Karthi (Paruthiveeran) and Sathyaraj (Onbathy Rubai Note). It is a very difficult question - who among them had come out with the best performance as all of them were equally good in the their roles. Take a look at the best actor (female) category - it is even more difficult choice to make - Jyothika (Mozhi), Priyamani (Paruthiveeran), Tamanna (Kaloori), Archana (Onbathu Rupai Note) and Nayanthara (Billa).

Who will walk away with the best music director award this year? Each of the music directors have worked wonders to make the songs chart busters which also resulted in the films doing well at the box office. Will it be AR Rahman nominated for two albums Sivaji and Azhagiya Tamil Magan, Yuvan Shankar Raja (Paruthiveeran), Vidya Sagar (Mozhi) or Harris Jayaraj (Unnale Unnale).

Glancing through the nominations it is quite evident that this year the competition is stiff as there are far too many good films, artists and technicians fighting to lay their hands on the shield of honour. The jury will decide the winners in each category depending on the votes polled.

As a run-up to the event, Radio Mirchi has lined up a host of activities and contests that would run on all its Southern stations – Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, Vishakapatnam, Vijaywada, Bangalore and Mangalore.

Sandeep Sud, vice-president and cluster head, Radio Mirchi Chennai, said, "We are delighted to be the official radio partners for the prestigious 55th Tiger Balm Filmfare South Awards, which are considered the Oscars of South India. With this association, Radio Mirchi once again has re-established their strong affiliation with the film industry of the South."
