HT Media chairman KK Birla |
Legendary Krishna Kumar Birla, the eldest son of the legendary G D Birla, died on Saturday morning at his Kolkata residence after a brief illness. He was 90. The cremation was held at Keoratala Burning Ghat at 3.30 pm on August 31.
Born at Pilani in Rajasthan on November 11, 1918, KK Birla is survived by three daughters and four grandsons. The daughters are Nandini Nopany, Shobhna Bhartia (vice-chairperson and editorial adviser of HT Media) and Jyotsna Poddar. His wife Manorama Devi Birla died a month ago.
HT Media, one of India's largest newspaper houses that publishes the Hindustan Times, has been since 1924 and has roots in the independence movement. When KK Birla took charge of HT, it was far from being a profitable company, leave alone being among India's most successful and diversified media companies that it became under his stewardship.
KK's funeral was attended by all his daughters and grandsons. His grandsons C S Nopany, Kumarmangalam Birla, Akshay Poddar, Shamit and P Bhartia carried the mortal remains to the burning ghat from Birla Park.
Leading corporate figures of Kolkata - Y C Deveswar, chairman, ITC, Vivek Saraogi, managing director, Balrampur Chini, S K Todi, chairman, Shrachi Group, Sudhir Jalan, former president, FICCI, C K Dhanuka, chairman, Dhunseri Group, G Swarup of Paharpur Industries, G D Kothari of Albert David and S S Kanoria attended the funeral.
A business leader par excellence, KK was also a parliamentarian, scholar and philanthropist. He was Rajya Sabha member for 18 years and was twice elected sheriff of Calcutta. He was conferred Doctor of Letters by Pondicherry University.
KK established the K K Birla Foundation that instituted annual awards for excellence in Indian literature, scientific research and Indian philosophy. But his biggest achievement in the field of education was making BITS, Pilani, an internationally reputed technology institute. KK was the chancellor of this institute, which was granted the status of a university.
KK was chairman of a Rs 12,000 crore empire that includes companies like Hindustan Times Media, Chambal Fertilisers, Zuari Industries, Texmaco. His industrial empire spanned industries like media, sugar, fertilizers, chemicals to heavy engineering, textiles, and shipping.
