    BSNL Pune commercially launches IPTV services

    After the successful testing of Internet protocol television (IPTV) and video on demand (VoD) services in Pune over the last 18 months, BSNL Pune has officially introduced the services on a commercial basis to its customers from October 2, 2008. With this, Pune will be one of the few cities in the country to have access to IPTV services.

    IPTV services offer customers both free-to-air and pay broadcast channels on home personal computers (PC) and TV sets. It will also have add-on facilities like VoD and gaming. The services will be made available through broadband facilities and a set top box.

    BSNL has come out with the revised commercial tariff plans for both services. Customers with a broadband connection at home can opt for the services. Last year, the IPTV services were launched on the experimental basis in collaboration with DiviNet Access Technologies, a content provider. In all, 101 channels will be made available through IPTV services.

    Speaking to Televisionpoint.com, V. K. Mahendra, principal general manager, BSNL - Pune, says,"In the last 18 months, BSNL has conducted various tests on the quality and feasibility of the service and the equipment. BSNL will be the first player in the market to provide TV services on the PC."

    Mahendra added that BSNL is expecting a good response to the service. "We expect over 5,000 customers to register in the next four months." at present, the company offers the services to 500 customers on an experimental basis.

    Customers will have to approach BSNL service centres in order to enroll for IPTV services. The services will be available at all 41 customers service centres in the city. Installation and commissioning charges have been brought down from Rs 600 to Rs 250. Other charges are also being set according to the packages for paid channels and bouquet channels.
