Devendra Khandelwal to produce serial on Mahatma Gandhi

After Richard Attenborough's Gandhi, released in 1982 that created history by winning eight Oscars besides numerous national and international awards, none of the movies on the great reformer was able to make a mark on the audience.

However, a unique attempt is being made by Mumbai based Indian Infotainment Media Corporation (IIMC) to take the apostle of peace to every household through the small screen. IIMC, led by chief producer Devendra Khandelwal, will soon produce what he claims as first-ever serial on Mahatma Gandhi.

United Television (UTV), another big production house, in association with Smriti Irani Productions, has already announced plans to produce a serial on one of the greatest thinkers and leaders of the world.

"Ours will be a pioneering venture based on real life experiences of Mahatma Gandhi and incidents which inspired generations. His sacrifices have been chronicled on screen before several times, but our serial will convey a social message in every episode," Khandelwal said on the sidelines of the International Film Festival on the doyen of peace, organised at Sewagram Ashram by IIMC to mark Gandhi Jayanti last week.

Khandelwal not only as producer-director but also as an actor and writer, is ready with a script of 26-episode opera. He has been recognised by Limca Book of Records as the biggest director of short films and perhaps the only film-maker who made maximum number of short films on Gandhi.

"The script is very touching and liked by Usha Mehta who was on the jury that passed Attenborough's Gandhi. She found the script realistic and hoped that the serial will be a hit among masses," said Khandelwal, who has 17-18 serials and many documentaries to his credit.

"After a long search we zeroed in on an actor who will play the role of Gandhi. Now the search for Kasturba is on. The shooting will commence shortly and the serial will be on air next year. We plan to produce the serial basically in English language and then it would be dubbed in other languages. We plan to market it globally for overseas audience," Khandelwal stated.
