CNN-IBN and IBN7 will salute the spirit of citizen journalists by recognising their efforts with the first ever Citizen Journalist Awards. The Citizen Journalist Awards recognise those who have been reporting fearlessly and are changing the system for a better tomorrow. The Awards would be given out at a ceremony in Delhi on October 16.

Rajdeep Sardesai, editor-in-chief, IBN Network, said, "Citizen journalism lies at the heart of CNN-IBN's raison d'etre of inclusive journalism. It not only engages the viewer in public life and encourages them to be proactive, but also transforms news into an interactive and multilateral process. CJ Awards will reward the best citizen journalists who have made an impact with their efforts to find the truth and we are sure that this will encourage more participation from our viewers."

"Citizen journalism is one of the best examples of citizen empowerment and brings viewers to report the problem exactly in the manner they see it. We hope that with the first ever Citizen Journalist Awards we will be able to encourage the movement further and inspire citizens to take a stand and fight back," said Ashutosh, managing editor, IBN7.

Citizen Journalist stories for CNN-IBN and IBN7 were short-listed by the Editorial Heads of IBN18 Network. Winners will be selected by a jury consisting of citizens such as Dr Kiran Bedi, retired IPS officer and Magsaysay Awardee for government service; ad guru and writer Prasoon Joshi; journalist/author Madhu Trehan; film director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra; actor-film director and social activist Nandita Das; Neelam Krishnamoorthy, member, Association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy; Arvind Kejriwal, RTI activist, Magsaysay Awardee for emergent leadership and founder, Parivartan.

The Citizen Journalist Awards will comprise categories like Special CJ – A CJ who has made efforts to bring about changes in various fields; Fight Back CJ – A CJ who has fought against corruption, bureaucratic delay or simple high-handedness; Save Your City CJ – A CJ who has fought for various city issues; Green CJ – A CJ who has worked towards undertaking an effective green initiative; Be the Change CJ. There would also be Awards for Best Video and Best Picture.

As a build up to the Awards ceremony, half-hour special episodes will be aired on CNN-IBN and IBN7 profiling the nominees of the Citizen Journalist Awards in different categories on October 11 and October 18. The Awards ceremony would culminate into a special episode on CNN-IBN and IBN7 on October 25.
