Alliance Media & Entertainment has entered into an agreement with a Japanese animation studio to distribute its animation content in India. The movies, which would be targeted at kids and teenagers, would be distributed under a new label called Junior.

The entertainment and talent management company is also looking at raising $ 30 million through private equity placement spread over three years. Alliance Media & Entertainment has bought the distribution rights of these 11 animation movies from Japanese animation studio Studio Ghibli for an estimated $ 8 million.

Founded by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, Studio Ghibli has made animation movies like Academy Award winner Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke.

"We believe that there is lack of good content for children in the country which we plan to bridge through our label-Junior. The animation movies would not only be showcased on the big screen but would also be targeted at television and home video space," said Sunil Doshi, CEO, Alliance Media & Entertainment.

Doshi added that the firm is in talks with distributors and multiplex operators to screen these animation titles during the weekend morning slots to begin with. Besides Japanese animation content, the media company plans to bring in content from Scandinavian and North American countries for kids. While the project will start with metro cities, the company hopes to tap the market in smaller towns and cities in the future.

The company is looking to invest $ 15 million through internal accruals for its expansion plans and hopes to recover the money in the next 2-3 years. It is also in negotiation with other investors to bring in more funds.

"We are in talks with venture capitalists and if our deal goes through we would like to raise additional funds worth $25-30 million in the next three years," said Doshi.

Alliance Media is into celebrity management, production and distribution of movies. It has produced movies like Bheja Fry and Mixed Doubles over the last two years.
