Safe Point Trust launches safe injection campaign

    Thursday - Nov 20, 2008

Safe Point Trust, a UK based charity organisation, has launched a pan-India safe injection awareness campaign this week. The week-long campaign involves a spend of about € 700,000 and uses the mass media to convey the message.

The campaign roll-out includes a three-minute film broadcast in 300 cinema halls across 14 cities in the country, a television commercial across leading news channels and radio spots to boost awareness. Former President of India Dr Abdul Kalam, Dr Kiran Bedi, Lila Poonawalla and Save the Children have shown their support for the cause.

"The World Health Organisation (WHO) reveals that more than 50 per cent of all injections used in the developing world are unsafe, which would mean that they are performed with reused or unsterile equipment." says, Marc Koska, founder, Safe Point Trust.

"As part of the India programme, we will follow up the awareness campaign by meeting the authorities. We will also be networking with key NGOs and social workers to raise awareness levels." adds Koska.

The first campaign is a 30-second spot showing the fate of a young boy called Sachin, who becomes a victim of a reused syringe that the doctor has used on many other patients. Dr Kiran Bedi has done the voiceover, who in her inimitable style highlights the plight of the young boy who unsuspectingly becomes a victim.

The rationale behind this campaign is to create and inform the next generation by raising awareness, especially among children, of the dangers of unsafe injections. The spot has been created by Dr Robert Charles of Safe Point Trust, while the media is handled by Madison.

Apart from mass media campaign, the organisation is conducting press meeting in several cities in the country, and is also using communication tools like public awareness messages, public awareness leaflets, amongst other promotional activities.

According to WHO estimates, approximately 2,30,000 HIV infections, 10,00,000 Hepatitis C infections, 21,000,000 Hepatitis B infections and 1,300,000 deaths occur worldwide every year due to unsafe injections.
